Solution:
Hurco Design and Manufacturing (Hurco) was excited about being awarded the Holliday Municipal Center project. The project required a unique blend of challenges, combining solid wood, laminate, custom wood bending, solid surface fabrication, commercial cabinets, and custom millwork. The project was to be done using AWI QCP Premium Grade specifications, and the contract included installation.
Having been AWI QCP Premium Grade certified for over 7 years, Hurco was familiar with the stringent requirements, and looked forward to seeing the finished product.
Understanding the challenges of the project, Hurco quickly began executing the “Hurco Process.” First, assigning the contract team which consisted of the original Estimator, a dedicated Project Manager, and a Drafting Engineer.
As with all awarded projects, the Estimator scheduled a “handoff” of the project. During the “handoff” all members of the contract team discuss the scope of work, the owner, architect, and general contractor expectations, the materials required for the project, the project scheduled timeline, and missing information that require answers to RFI’s (request for information) before manufacturing can proceed. Assignments and deadlines are delegated to each member of the contract team and follow-up meetings are scheduled appropriately given the scope of the project.
Submittal drawings were to be complete and ready for internal review 4 weeks from the award of the contract. This was to be completed by the assigned drafting engineer from our in house design and engineering department.
The dedicated project manager contacted the General Contractor for introductions and went about getting answers to questions Hurco had about the project. I.E material colors and trim profiles. Field measurements were scheduled. The project manager also worked with purchasing for material availability and lead times, coordinating material lead times with plant production work orders and project delivery dates. Installation crews were scheduled.
Hurco was able to maintain flexibility and control of this project due to the fact that they were able to manufacture the entire scope of work in house with exception to the glass that was to be used in the transom and sidelights of several interior and exterior doors. This was a huge challenge as the transom’s required a solid wood bend. Drawings and production needed to be perfect in order for the glass to fit around the bend in these highly custom areas. Coordination between Hurco and the glass manufacturer had to be flawless.
In-house capabilities on this project included:
Drafting
Laminated counter-tops with solid wood trim
Solid Wood Exterior and Interior door systems
Trim, moldings, handrail, Transom and Sidelights
Solid Surface countertop fabrication
Wainscoting
Commercial Cabinets
Transfer Countertops and Doors
Solid Wood Bends
The job was a huge success and very gratifying to all who participated in it.
